Successful kick-off workshop for the Futouris project Climate-friendly Product Design

What tools and methods can tour operators use to make their products more environmentally friendly? This question is the focus of the project "Climate-friendly product design for tour operators", which was launched in February 2024 as part of the BMWK LIFT transformation program.

Co-creation process for practical measures

Together with the scientific partner NIT Institut für Tourismus- und Bäderforschung in Nordeuropa GmbH and member companies of Futouris and forum anders reisen e.v., practical tools and training programs are being developed in a co-creation process in order to integrate climate impact into the product development of tour operators.

Kick-Off Workshop in Frankfurt

At the beginning of April, employees from the eight pilot companies came together in Frankfurt to explore the topic together with the project team in a workshop. The workshop was held at the Biohotel Villa Orange, which provided an ideal setting for the discussions and activities.

During the workshop, options for the development of instruments and key figures for the analysis of product portfolios and possible measures to reduce emissions, such as the increased integration of climate-friendly means of transport or the offer of climate-friendly excursions, were discussed, examined in depth and evaluated with regard to their feasibility. A particular challenge lay in adapting the measures to the different products and conditions of the participating companies, which range from small specialist providers to large tour operators.

Another important agenda topic was the transfer of knowledge to managers and employees in the relevant areas of the tour operators. This involved raising awareness of the climate impact of their products as well as the know-how for implementing the measures and applying the tools developed. The answers to the questions “who”, “how”, “what” and “when” were jointly developed and form the basis for the next steps of the project, with the aim of further deepening and practically implementing the knowledge gained

Climate-friendly product design

The “Climate-friendly product design” project as part of the BMWK’s LIFT Transformation program aims to develop instruments and training programs with partners from science and industry in order to integrate the criterion of climate impact more strongly into the product development and management of tour operators.
